How long does a Commercial EPC last?

A Commercial Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) lasts for ten years from the day it’s issued. During that time you can use the same certificate to market, lease or sell your property, even if you make changes to the building. The law just says you need a valid EPC when a property is put on the market, not that you have to renew it after every upgrade.

That said, it’s often worth refreshing your EPC if you’ve made improvements like new lighting, heating or insulation. A better rating can make your building more attractive to tenants and help you stay ahead of Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES). Some owners also renew early to show progress on sustainability goals.

As long as your certificate is still in date, you’re compliant. But if it’s getting close to expiry or you want to show off a higher rating, you can always get a new one. Find out what’s involved on our Commercial EPC page.
